Over time, a large number of couples who have decided not to have children. This, due to factors such as unemployment, inequality, inflation of the family basket and the exuberant prices of academic education.

However, a new reason for not procreating has emerged today. This has to do with the environmental crisis, given that natural resources have been wasted in an excessive way and the new generations have had to travel in more polluted environments.

This is demonstrated by one of the most recent studies by the World Health Organization, which revealed that 9 out of 10 people breathe harmful air. In addition, they have asserted year after year that more than 5 million people die from health problems unleashed by the environmental crisis.

Added to this, OECD predictions have shown that by 2050 greenhouse gases may increase by up to 50%. Likewise, they point out that if the current rate is maintained, in that year air pollution will be the first cause of premature deaths.

Creating a movement that does not want children

Thus, BirthStrikers was created, an organized group of women and men who have made the decision not to have children due to the environmental situation. This, since they affirm that their children would be exposed to water shortages, constant fires and irresistible climates.

What the group seeks to communicate to people is that in order to have children who enjoy a decent future, it is necessary to change habits. In this way, the initiative has increasingly found support from multiple couples around the world.

However, even on a day-to-day basis, industries continue to use techniques that generate pollution, felling of trees and contamination of wastewater. For that reason, the people of this movement remain firm in their convictions.

“I would like to start a family with my partner, but I don’t feel like this is the time to do this,” said Blythe Pepino, the British woman who created BirthStrikes.

However, the movement has explained that it is not against people who decide to be parents. In fact, they state that their fight is also for them , since the aim is for the entire population to change their actions so that the children of the future are not left adrift.

For that reason, today the group continues to add new members and spread their thoughts through the web. In addition, they call on governments around the world to begin taking urgent action to reverse the consequences of climate change.

Finally, it is essential to encourage recycling so that products extend their useful life and do not waste new raw materials unnecessarily. Likewise, this activity makes it possible to take care of the occupation of landfills and reduce the emission of gases that cause an excessive increase in temperatures.
